Romantic Comedy: Bridget Jones's diary

Mise-en-scene:
In the opening sequence of Bridget Jones's Diary, the lighting is low key which creates a dark, lonely atmosphere and creates sympathy in the audience. Additionally she is wearing red pajamas to show that she has nothing to do, even on Christmas; the colour red may symbolise either the love or anger she is feeling, it also relates to Christmas because it is red and reminds us that she is alone, even on Christmas. The credits and titles are a muted orange colour, that look hand written, this may be to reflect how her hand writting is in her diary and also it is quite scruffy and messy which may represent how she feels.

Editing:
After Bridget checks her emails and discovers she has none, she walks out the room, rather than cutting the shot to follow her the camera remains in place and the image of her dissolves back onto the couch, this demonstrates how insignificant she feels,
because her image dissolves in, and could represent how she is living her life, and just going where the wind goes.

Cinematography:
Additionally the whole scene where she is singing "All By Myself" she the camera shot is just one long shot that lasts the whole way. This could convey how lonely she is, she has no one for company not even the audience because the camera is so far. However the fact that she is singing and acting so irrationally may make the audience sympathise with her although at the same time, we find humor in it.

Sound:
The cliche song "All By Myself" is mimed to by Bridget Jones to imply how lonely she is, the words are simply communicating her feelings. When she mimes along to the drumming, her feelings of anger where expressed as she was making quite aggressive movements as though she was even punching someone. The start of the song "All By Myself" is played even when she is at dinner, although the lyrics do not start yet, it implies that even though she is surrounded by all her family and a lot of people she still feels lonely. The lack of diegetic sound when she is miming to the song conveys how lonely she is as there is no sound around her because there is no one with her to talk to.
